Passeriformes

An order of birds that are characterized by three forward and one backward pointing toe. The foot of a passerine bird automatically curls when it lands on a branch, enabling the bird perch (which is why the passerines are also called perching birds). Most smaller songbirds belong to the Passeriformes. Well-known non-passerine birds are for example water birds, birds of prey, owls, parrots or hummingbirds.
